Pendu just did a pretty neat article on Witch House, but what I got a chuckle out of was the use of ‘USER’ for the title of the person who started using the term heavily outside of it’s original meaning. And I guess I am a user. I’m happy to take a word and twist it from its original intended meaning (see previous thing on ‘What is Gucci Goth’) and frankly I think the term does fit. What I started using it for though was mainly just as an alternate idea of ‘goth’ or ‘dark’ music. I wasn’t trying to steal Travis’ thunder or anything, I just snagged the word because I liked the sound and I need a cool title for a comp I was making. The WITCH HAVS comp itself was across the board: S4LEM chillin’ with The Skaters and Gary War, stuff that smelled like magic and psychedelia. Then for fun I just started tagging stuff on last.fm as ‘witch house’, eventually made the tag page, and people started running with it. And now there’s a New York Times article talking about it, which is funny as hell to me. So yeah, maybe witch house as a genre is nonsensical, and maybe it’s hard to pin every band in it down as such. And you really shouldn’t take it seriously. But jesus christ, it’s SO much better than ‘drag’.
